"There is always legitimate concern about the pressure on parties to chase large donations and deliver for their donors particularly when Liberal MPs report that it is 'very, very hard' to raise money for the next election," said Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon.
"The NSW ICAC has revealed the NSW Liberal Party broke the law in NSW when they undertook fundraising and funnelled donations between the state and federal branches for the 2011 state election.
"Today's report that regional airline Rex donated $385,000 to the Labor, National and Liberal parties at the same time it was being investigated by the Air Traffic Safety Bureau adds to the public perception that political donations usually come with strings attached.
"Political donation reform is urgently needed before the next election.
"The Greens bill before the Senate to ban political donations from developers, the alcohol, gambling, and tobacco industries provides a clear pathway for much needed reform.
"We need strict limits on election expenditure to remove the incentive for parties to accept large donations that have proven to be a corrupting influence in our democracy.
"A reduced disclosure limit of $1000 and real time disclosure of donations is also needed," said Senator Rhiannon.
