Greens look forward to NDIS debate, but people need to know where Mr Abbott stands

2 May 2013

The Australian Greens welcome the Prime Minister's announcement that NDIS legislation will come before parliament in the next session and look forward to beginning negotiations as soon as possible,"  Australian Greens disabilities spokesperson Senator Rachel Siewert said today.

"The government has always had the numbers for this legislation but has spent the past few days playing political games. They should now get on with negotiating an outcome," Senator Siewert said.

"The Greens are open to discussing all measures to fund this scheme.

"Given that the Prime Minister is currently asking all Australians to share the cost of this scheme, the flawed mining tax and unnecessary concessions to some of Australia's richest companies should also be on the table.

"If we got rid of the flaws in the mining tax we could raise $26 billion. If we got rid of fossil fuel subsidies to the big miners, we could raise $13 billion. The ALP cannot overlook these opportunities.

"The Coalition has put a big caveat on its support for a Medicare levy increase, describing it as a 'temporary increase' that can be removed later. The Australian people need to know exactly where Mr Abbott stands.

"An NDIS is important for meeting the care and support needs of Australians living with a disability and MPs need to effectively deliver it," Senator Siewert said.
