Record low cull must spell the end for whaling

Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on whaling says Australians will be celebrating the fact that so few whales were taken in the summer whaling season, acknowledging the success of the Sea Shepherd campaign.

"Instead of continuing their rhetoric and threats about more whaling, the Japanese Government should move to end their annual cull," Senator Siewert said today.

"The Japanese Fisheries Minister has today threatened that his Government will seek more support from other countries to conduct whaling.

"Unfortunately, this is a sign that the Japanese Government has not abandoned this cruel hunt. I have no doubt they will continue to subsidise this failing industry in spite of falling demand for whale meat in Japan and the fact that the whole world knows they are commercially whaling.

"The threat posed by the Japanese whaling program does not end now the fleet has left the Southern Ocean.

"The Australian Government needs to work hard in order to build further international pressure on Japan and to explore all legal options for making sure the fleet never returns to the Southern Ocean," Senator Siewert concluded.
