Petition calls for abolition of the Game Council

David Shoebridge

David Shoebridge today submitted a petition of over two hundred signatures to the NSW Legislative Council calling for the abolition of the Game Council and for the government to legislate for a permanent end to recreational hunting in NSW.

Greens MP and Firearms Spokesperson David Shoebridge said:

"The petition I presented today calls for the immediate abolition of the Game Council, which, scandalously, receives more than $2.75 million of public funding every year.

"We have recently seen the Game Council accused of presiding over illegal activity as well as a culture of drink, drugs and extreme recklessness amongst hunters.

"The government review of the Game Council announced in February is evidence that even the Game Council's friends are beginning to distance themselves from this publicly-funded lobby group that pushes guns, hunting and blood sports, even at the cost of public safety.

"So-called 'conservation hunting' by amateurs on public land promoted by the Game Council has almost no impact on the numbers of feral animals, results in needless animal suffering, and places National Park users and workers at risk.

"The Greens believe that the Game Council should be abolished, and that the government should legislate to permanently end recreational hunting on public land," Mr Shoebridge said.
