Coal dust results demand Hunter inquiry hearings and T4 rejection

MEDIA RELEASE - 8 March 2013

Federal Hunter MP Joel Fitzgibbon should be working alongside the Greens to secure hearings in the Hunter of a Senate inquiry into the impacts of air quality on health in light of new research results showing coal dust levels injurious to residents' health, says Australian Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon.

"CTAG's study results show coal dust fine particles, which scientists are dubbing 'the new asbestos', at levels dangerous to human health and Mr Fitzgibbon should be ashamed of his past stance arguing against Senate hearings in the Hunter ," Senator Rhiannon said.

"Mr Fitzgibbons owes it to his constituents to push hard for hearings of the Greens-initiated Senate inquiry to be held in the Hunter region.

"The Australian Greens congratulate CTAG for initiating this study. It is shameful that a community group must fund air quality monitoring which is properly the responsibility of government.

"These damning results could suggest why the government has shied away from thorough and comprehensive air quality monitoring.

"The industrial revolution, which killed hundreds of thousands of people while ruining air and water quality, is two centuries behind us. This historical horror story should not be repeated.
"The CTAG study results build an even stronger case for the cancellation of the T4 coal loader, which will only compound health costs," Senator Rhiannon said.
