The Greens NSW spokesperson on Primary Industries Jeremy Buckingham expressed concern that the O'Farrell Government had stripped $102 million out of the Department of Primary Industries, while creating a $185 million grant program that looks suspiciously like a pork barrel fund.
"It's a disgrace that the O'Farrell Government has stripped the DPI budget by almost 10% or $102 million dollars in a time when natural resource management and agriculture are facing critical challenges," said Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham.
"There is a surprising lack of detail in the budget about which areas will be cut, but it seems at least some of the money has been transferred to what looks suspiciously like a pork barrel fund," he said.
Budget Paper 3, 8-7 announces $185 million in operating grants to cultural institutions to help them enhance cultural, creative and recreation opportunities.
Mr Buckingham said this looked suspiciously like a fund for local members to pork barrel through individual projects.
"The Greens are very concerned that funds have been taken out of important areas within DPI to create what looks like a big fat pork barrel. This is not good governance," he said.
