NSW Government must take charge and end toxic asbestos legacy - Greens

A Sun-Herald investigation (Page 1 & 8-9) has revealed the terrifying extent
of illegal asbestos dumping in NSW, with an estimated two thirds of asbestos
contaminated waste being dumped illegally and therefore, dangerously.

Greens MP and environment spokesperson Cate Faehrmann says:

"The fact the NSW Government has no idea where and how much this is going on
is terrifying, because we don't even know which communities, workers and
families are at risk."

"Asbestos is one of our most toxic legacies and it's being kept alive by
illegal dumping. In the end the government needs to take ultimate
responsibility for the risk to public health and the environment.

"The Premier and Environment Minister must finish what campaigners like the
late Bernie Banton started and completely stamp out asbestos illegal dumping
and its toxic legacy.

"The government could use some of its lucrative waste levy to take control
of this situation.

"Where is the government's statewide asbestos plan it announced last year?
They should be paying licenced asbestos removalists to get the stuff out of
people's homes and creating a central register of illegal dumping. We also
need better compliance monitoring to catch rogue operators.

"What's clear is that the EPA has been so gutted over recent years it can't
perform its responsibilities with regards to compliance. It beggars belief
that up to two thirds of asbestos dumping is illegal despite widespread
knowledge that this is a very deadly substance," said Ms Faehrmann.
